For two years now my nose has led me into Baker and Scone at 693 St. Clair Avenue West. The fresh baked aromas wafting out of this pretty little shop are unbelievable. In fact, I think this bakery is the best thing to happen to this area of St. Clair (I know some will say it is the Stockyard Restaurant).

Sandra Katsion brings her love of scones to this newish shop. The place is white, quaint and cozy. Every day there is a new selection of sweet and savoury scones. She makes up to 40 varieties of these wondrous delights. Today they had lemon currant (a personal favourite), blueberry, caramel, orange date cardamom, lemon curd, and raspberry jam, as well as savoury variations, such as cheddar, chives and dill (another personal favourite), feta and tomatoes, chèvre and asparagus. They are usually still warm when you purchase them and the perfume in the air that they create is amazing. The bake shop serves them with butter rather than clotted cream, but they are so good you really need neither. They are rich and flaky, and one of the best scones I have ever eaten.

They also sell salads, a daily soup, yogurt parfait, and savory entrees. But why bother? It’s all about the scone. There is a small eat-in section, and they serve breakfast, lunch, brunch and takeout. They also do a nice job of catering, which I have tried. I hear the coffee is quite good too as is the lemonade.

They are open Tuesday to Sunday.

I dare you to make it to your car without a bite or two. A little birdie told me they are hoping to expand to larger premises nearby.

Highly recommended.

Happy dining,
Shanea
