Bellissima: Italy and High Fashion 1945-1968 :: NSU Art Museum, Ft. Lauderdale

I recently visited Bellissima: Italy and High Fashion 1945-1968, an exhibition on view at Ft. Lauderdale’s NSU Art Museum at One East Las Olas Boulevard.

Exploring the complex and ever-changing story of Italian high fashion (alta moda) through a contemporary lens, the exhibit highlights stunning garments designed by creators, such as: Valentino, Pucci, Simonetta, and Fendi, among many others. The exquisite outfits were accompanied by fabulous vintage jewels from Bulgari and footwear from Ferragamo. There were also photos, and film paying tribute to the founders of Italy’s unique and significant contributions to the history of design, from luxurious, high fashion to everyday. Especially beautiful was the period textiles on display – they were simply lush.

What I found most interesting was how many of the creations are still relevant. 1945-1968 were highly productive years in Italian fashion and this lovely exhibit offers a wonderful glimpse into a time where the appreciation of craftsmanship and creative designs worked in hand with practicality and the industrialising of the trade for which the “Made in Italy” brand became known.

It is a small exhibit, but it is one worth visiting.

Recommended.
