Beneath the snow-capped Andean Peaks, in nearby Cusco, lies Peru’s Sacred Valley, about a 90-minute drive from the Cusco airport.

Located along the edges of the Sacred Valleys mighty Urubamba River is an oasis, a perfect place to acclimatize and rest before visiting Machu Picchu. Situated close to fields and lush mountains is one of Peru’s loveliest properties, The Belmond Rio Sagrado. It is a unique hideaway in the Sacred Valley, an exclusive enclave modeled on Andean Life, with 5-star service (Peruvian style).

It has 8 low rise accommodations, in semi-detached terra cotta tiled buildings built into a hill and overlooking the grounds and rushing river. There are also two private villas, of which one, we were lucky to reside in. It was a spacious two floor, three bedroom private house overlooking the expanse of the property. It came with a full kitchen, dining and living room, and I didn’t want to leave the property for a few days, after much needed R&R.

We awoke to the peaceful and beautiful landscape, with baby alpacas feeding in the garden, the sounds of the rushing river, and a lovely pool on the grounds. The spa housed in a wood and stone complex offers relaxing treatments for the weary traveler.

I recommend taking at least a junior suite that has large windows and private outdoor terraces. The rooms are cleverly laid out infusing the indoors and outdoors. The rooms are done with alpaca fabrics, indigenous designs and traditional materials. There are 24 deluxe rooms and junior suites, so this is a very intimate property.

There is a restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner called El Huerto. The food is not bad, especially considering how isolated you are. I wouldn’t venture out for meals elsewhere, however, most people are out touring during the day.

In high season, January to April, the Hiram Bingham train stops at a private station, right at the hotel. This is so convenient to take to Machu Picchu.

I recommend this hotel as a great base for your Andean adventures.

Happy travels,
Shanea
