Toronto is very fortunate to have a spectacular exhibition exploring light, color and form, by one of the world’s foremost artists working in glass today. Dale Chihuly’s show is now at the Royal Ontario Museum. Chihuly is an American sculpture based in Seattle, globally renowned for his installations in public spaces. He’s shown in over 250 museums and gardens worldwide, including the Met and the Smithsonian.

He learned the technique of blowing glass in Venice, which is a centuries-old approach. He felt every other medium has been used or overused in art except for glass. He has been working in this medium for over 50 years.

The exhibit showcases his magnificent and colorful hand-blown glass work. Some of his older works, as well as ones made specifically for the ROM, are on display. They are very dramatic and colorful creations – quite stunning and mesmerizing. He has mastered the translucent and transparent qualities of glass and can manipulate this fragile substance into glorious forms. This art form is really quite unique.

The 7-month exhibition features some of his most impressive pieces, providing an opportunity to see and explore the full range of his artistic achievements by immersing visitors in the beautiful environments created through his extraordinary vision and talent. This show is not to be missed. It runs from June 25th, 2016 to January 2nd, 2017 in the Museum’s Garfield Weston Exhibit Hall.

Highly recommended.
