As fate would have it, I took a different route home, driving north on NE Second Avenue, when I noticed a sign that said Cindy Lou’s Cookies. I made a quick U-turn, parked, and found myself walking into 7320 NE 2nd Avenue. Boy am I glad I made that spontaneous decision. I smelled my way into this charming bakery, with delicious aromas and oversized cookies. I was warmly welcomed by the cute, pigtailed proprietor, Cindy Kruse, who couldn’t have been nicer. She even treated me to a cookie because I was a first time customer. She is smart because I am hooked.

Cindy is no slouch as a baker. She has been in the biz for over 25 years and worked in the big league as a pastry chef for the likes of Wolfgang Puck, Emeril Lagasse, Charlie Trotter, Jean Georges and Charlie Palmer. In 2005 she was the executive pastry chef at the Fountainbleau. She has been featured in Gourmet Magazine, The Wine Spectator, and People Magazine. But, it’s hard to keep up such a strenuous, high-paced routine like that, and she and her partner in life and crime, Eric Paige (a savoury chef) decided to open their doors to an easier life, and to bake for the kid in her, and in us. She bakes cookies, brownies, banana bread, and granola. She serves them up with some Panther coffee.

She has survived a year of awful construction on NE 2nd Avenue and has not only made the locals happy, but she has also become a destination enterprise for many cookie monsters. That is because she bakes with quality ingredients and real butter. She adds things like lemon zest, macadamia nuts, brown butter, marshmallows, good chocolate, and so on. Her cookies are delicious and old-fashioned with interesting choices like rocky road, lemon cloud, red velvet, Nutella swirl, lemon poppyseed, coconut macaroon, oatmeal cranberry white chocolate chip, peanut butter and jelly, salted chocolate truffle and the list goes on. They are crunchy on the outside, dense, buttery, decadent and chewy on the inside. They are everything a cookie should be. Finally, Miami has a place making great cookies. They are large enough to share at $4 each. You will thank me for this review. If you can’t make it down there, they deliver through Postmates. Baking some of Miami’s best cookies that “warm the heart and nourish the soul” – I love finding a place as special as this, and you will too.

Remember, you will need two hands to eat one.

Highly recommend!

Happy eating,
Shanea
