We found an elegant, romantic, serene, intimate restaurant with dim lights, white tablecloths, beautiful background music, professional service, sound pacing, and each dish a visual joy. Is this Capri? A resounding YES!

Three years new, and people are starting to discover this tiny gem only a few minutes walk from the main piazzetta at Via L’Abate 3. Gennaro Amitrano is a husband and wife establishment with only 5 tables and a private room across the way that serves 8 patrons. Formerly a pub, it has been renovated and transformed into a handsome room.

The food is prepared with passion, respect and skill, with a modern interpretation of Italian cuisine by Chef Amitrano. The chef has a solid pedigree having worked for Alain Ducasse at Louis XV for three years, and for Chef Gianfranco Visani at his two-star Michelin restaurant in Umbria. In fact, he started cooking in his father’s kitchen at age 8.

The restaurant offers two tasting menus, a 5 course at 75 Euro, a 7 course at 105 Euro, or a la carte selections. There is a small, well curated wine list with a focus on French or local wines, or a three or 5 glass wine pairing, at a reasonable price of 35 or 45 euros respectively.

We opted for the 5 course, starting with a fish amuse, an interesting shrimp carpaccio with burrata cheese, toasted lentils, and black truffle. Next up, some delicious melanzane parmesan (eggplant parmesan). The chef brought out two pasta dishes, one at a time, because I expressed interest on both on the menu. A special of potato and escargot, and an “Ode a Nerano”, a spaghetti with shrimps, parmesan and basil. This was followed by a yellow tail tuna and some chicory. My one complaint is the chicory was over salted and unpleasant to eat.

Dessert was a custard with a thin chocolate wafer, and then a plate of petit fours.

The chef is attempting to serve Michelin standard gastronomy in a relaxed setting. This hidden treasure is out of the ordinary for Capri. The combination of the chef’s Italian heritage and his knowledge of Michelin star food and service is a great combination. His wife runs the front of the house, and her warmth and friendliness is a breath of fresh air.

The experience is out of the ordinary for Capri. It may not be a scene, or have a fabulous view, it surely makes up for it with food presented with love and care, and an upscale, fine dining experience. They offer an original, refined, modern take on Italian cuisine.

Recommend.

Happy dining,
Shanea
