In the heart of Como, you will find one of the most renowned restaurants in the city, La Colembetta, on Via Generale Armando Diaz 40. The rustic and cozy restaurant is located in a former church owned by three Sardinian sisters and seats 80. There are actually five separate dining areas over two floors. Three rooms on the main floor and two upstairs. For some reason, although we dined there during covid restrictions, they jammed us along with three other tables in a tiny room in the back instead of socially distancing us throughout the ample size main dining room. The ceilings are arched, the tables have tablecloths, and are candlelit. There is colorful artwork on the white walls, and the wood floors have a few Asian-style carpets thrown here and there. It all has a pleasant feel to it, which also comes with a warm welcome.

As soon as we sit down we are offered a complimentary Prosecco and a Sicilian bread drizzled in olive oil as we peruse the menu. Our waiter spoke very little English but we managed to order. I would say the menu is more traditional with a few modern touches. Your typical pasta dishes, tagliatelle with black truffles, a couple of meat and fish dishes. We went with the pasta with red shrimps and a branzino, Sardinian style. There was a small wine list on offer. After dessert, they provide complimentary digestifs.

All in all La Colombetta is a safe choice while in the Como area. It didn’t blow me away, but the food was wholesome, pleasant, and fresh.

Happy dining,
Shanea
