We spent our last night in Bangkok at a 2 star Michelin restaurant called R-Haan, which bills itself as a fine dining establishment serving authentic royal Thai cuisine, sourcing the freshest and finest ingredients from all over Thailand.

It is a quiet, elegant establishment far away from the hustle and bustle of Bangkok. You enter from a courtyard into a narrow entrance. There is a lounge area up front, and a red lit bar, and the dining room is on the lower level.

The ingredients and seasonings change with the seasons. The food is based on the proverb “there is fish in the water, and rice is in the fields”, which denotes the fertility of the land and the abundance of produce. The food is prepared by executive Chef Chumpol Jangprai and served on hand painted ceramics by Thai artisans.

We were there for the Monsoon Season menu. My favorite dish was the amuse Bouche presented in a wooden box. You open it to see a map of Thailand. There is a different bite in each part of the country, representing its diverse foods. So the southern part had a spicy dish of mixed mushrooms, the central part had a yellow crab curry croquette, and so on. This was followed by 5 courses. A pomelo and lobster salad, a poached deep sea black tiger prawn, organic chicken with coconut cream and galangal, and grilled wagyu with holy basil sauce. Course 5 was a sour soup with sea bass. Next up was a palate cleanser of a pink guava sorbet served with Moscato rosé. The main course gave you an option of selecting 3 out of the 4 courses offered. This was actually the least favourite part of the meal for me. The choices were beef ribs in green curry, river prawn Tom Yum Soup, sea bass with aromatic turmeric, deep fried crab with crab roe and yellow chilli and Highland brown super rice or Mali rice to accompany the above. For dessert a choice of either mango sticky rice, with mango parfait and coconut milk ice cream or Thai custard Mille-feuille with coconut cake with Thai coffee ice cream. Then some petit fours to finish the elaborate meal. Although there was a nice wine list we ordered some over the top cocktails.

All of the dishes served, were unique to items served to the royal family. They all combined 8 core flavors of sour, sweet, salty, bitter, spicy, strong, astringent and soft. They placed a lot of attention to detail. I understood most of the explanations although there was one server who definitely had a poor skill of the English language. But the staff were attentive, helpful and courteous.

Some of the presentations were theatrical on this large set menu, but not every dish was outstanding to rate 2 Michelin stars. It didn’t come close to our experience at Gaggan, but my impressions were mostly favorable.  Nice for a relaxed evening or special occasion where you can dress up and enjoy some refined fine dining. Recommend.

Happy dining,

Shanea

  1. I have read your article carefully and I agree with you very much. This has provided a great help for my thesis writing, and I will seriously improve it. However, I don’t know much about a certain place. Can you help me?

  2. Another excellent hand mixer for bread dough is the KitchenAid KHM512IC 5-Speed Ultra Power Hand Mixer. Its powerful motor and five speeds allow you to mix even the thickest bread dough, and its lightweight design makes it easy to maneuver. It also comes with stainless steel turbo beaters and a dough hook for added convenience. However, it may struggle with very large batches of dough.
