Zucca Trattoria located at 2150 Yonge St. across from the former Art Shop, has been around forever. Well at least since 1996. We used to go all the time but we have neglected it, always wanting to try new places. But we tried it again tonight and I have to say, Andrew Milne has some of the best Italian food in the city. It is a small mid-town eatery that could possibly use a face lift. But the food was still outstanding. It has been on Joanne Kates top 10 out of 100 for quite a few years now, and rightly so.

He changes his menu frequently based on seasonal availability. Some menu’s are better than others. Asparagus season just ended and now Zucchini Flower season is upon us. Andrew uses fresh and carefully chosen ingredients. Zucca has an authentic representation from different regions of Italy and its traditional cuisines. Andrew tries to use organic produce from local farmers.

We had no idea we were going during Summerlicious tonight, but we were not disappointed. The portions were large and there was a great variety of choices. It really was a bargain. We all started with the fried Zucchini Flower, topped with fresh Ricotta, fresh mint and drizzled with a reduced Balsamic dressing. Then we had the wonderful Cornish Hen sitting on a bed of cornmeal and chick pea pancake. For dessert we tried the lemon and blueberry Budino. Everything was excellent. The restaurant also makes its own pastas, and has wonderful fish and seafood dishes as well. If you don’t care for the mostly Italian wine list you can bring your own bottle for a $25 corkage fee.

The staff is very knowledgeable and personable. A special shout out to “Adley” (yes that Adley of Susur and Splendido) and Jaime.
This is a solid restaurant.
