Auberge Saint-Antoine is one of Quebec City’s most celebrated luxury hotels, located in the heart of the historic Old Port district and within easy walking distance of many of the city’s most important attractions, shops, and several of its finest restaurants. Its location is undoubtedly one of its greatest strengths. It is a blend of old and new.
The hotel is often referred to as a “museum hotel” because of the remarkable archaeological discoveries uncovered during construction, Artifacts dating back centuries, back to the1600’s on display throughout the property in a thoughtful and engaging manner, offering guests a glimpse into Quebec City’s rich history. One of the most interesting features can be found in the bar, where a glass floor and walls that reveals portions of the original foundations and remnants beneath the building.
Service was somewhat mixed during my stay. The front desk staff were competent and efficient, but lacked the warmth and attentiveness one expects from a hotel in this price category. The standout was concierge Geneviève, who was knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and genuinely helpful. Unfortunately, the concierge desk was frequently unattended. If Geneviève stepped away for lunch or a break, there was often no one available to assist guests, and the front desk was unable to fill that role effectively.
The décor throughout the public areas is best described as eclectic. While many guests may appreciate the mix of styles and furnishings, it wasn’t entirely to my taste. Considering the hotel’s historic setting, I had hoped for something with a bit more character and elegance.
The guest rooms were comfortable but smaller than expected and somewhat dark. The bathrooms featured an open shower design, a personal pet peeve of mine, as water inevitably finds its way onto the bathroom floor. Like many modern hotels, liquid dispensers have replaced traditional bars of soap in the shower — perhaps a sign of the times, but I still miss the simple luxury of hard soap.
Breakfast was served in a beautiful historic dining room that perfectly reflected the heritage of the building. While the setting was lovely, the food itself was good rather than memorable.
The hotel offers a courtesy vehicle for guests, a thoughtful amenity in theory. However, I was told it could only be used when more than one valet was on duty, and during much of my stay there appeared to be only a single valet working, making the service largely unavailable.
At over $1,000 per night, expectations naturally run high. While Auberge Saint-Antoine excels in location and historical significance, I found the overall experience fell short of what I expect from a luxury property at this price point. The service, room design, and public spaces lacked the polish and refinement I associate with truly exceptional hotels. For me, the experience felt closer to a well-run chain hotel than a world-class luxury property.
