A single outlet that began in 1987, now comprises multiple outlets and franchises all over Asia. Jumbo Seafood has a huge menu, and also serves dim sum, but what they are known for is their outstanding Singapore chilli crab. A huge, delicious crab in a spicy chilli sauce, that comes with bibs and gloves, and believe me you need them! Be prepared to get really messy… It’s not like Joe’s Stone Crab, where they expertly pre-crack the crab for you. Here you are given a seafood cracker and must attempt to dig in and crack them yourself. Let me tell you, they are slippery and are drenched in delectable sauce, and our table looked like a tsunami had hit.
They never came around to clean the table and we had to eat our dessert amongst this mess, but nonetheless it was a fun adventure. The crabs are pricey, about $80-100, depending on the size of the crab. We ordered their seafood fried rice to help sop up some of the fragrant sauce. The server suggested a dish called fried prawns with cereal which wasn’t that impressive. Our location was a beautiful restaurant situated inside the Ion on Orchard street, one of Singapore’s upscale designer malls. I’m not going to lie, we were both ill later that night, but it could have been that our systems were not used to the spice level. But we sure did enjoy the crab while we were eating it and washed it down with fresh squeezed watermelon juice. For dessert, we tried a mango pudding and a chilled mango and pomelo sago. Lunch was finger licking good! Happy dining, Shanea 06/11/22 |
