The Reykjavik Edition in Iceland, a five-star luxury hotel (under the Marriott brand), is arguably the best place to stay in the city of Reykjavik. Just a 45-minute drive from Iceland’s international airport, it enjoys a prime location by the scenic old harbor, right next to the striking Harpa Concert Hall and within walking distance of downtown Reykjavik’s shops, restaurants, and museums.

Designed by the legendary Ian Schrager, the hotel combines sleek, modern sophistication with warm Nordic touches. The interiors feature ash wood and grey oak tones, creating a refined yet inviting atmosphere. Panoramic views, thoughtful details, and accessories crafted by local artisans lend the space an authentic Icelandic character.

The 253-room hotel has a relaxed, understated luxury. As you enter the lobby, you’re greeted by a dramatic stone sculpture and a cozy lounge area with plush seating, faux sheepskin throws, and a fireplace, setting a welcoming tone.

Our first room was a beautiful suite with a view of the Harpa Concert Hall, but an electrical issue later in the evening (after we had unpacked) required us to switch rooms. Since the problem couldn’t be resolved that weekend, we were upgraded to the second-best suite in the hotel. This one faced the harbor and featured a sleek dining table that seated ten, along with a spacious living area. The bedroom in this suite was on the smaller side, but both rooms were stylishly furnished with woolen blankets, faux fur accents, and a modern, soundproof design. Toiletries by Le Labo added a touch of luxury.

Amenities include a small but well-equipped 24-hour gym, a lovely full-service spa, three restaurants, three bars, meeting and event space, valet service (around $50 per night), and underground parking. The rooftop bar is lively and always busy, and Tides Café offers excellent coffee, pastries, and light bites during the day. Laundry service is available, which is a rare and welcome feature in Iceland until you reach The Retreat at the Blue Lagoon.

Upon arrival, we were given a daily $50 credit to use at the café, spa, or bar—a thoughtful gesture. Breakfast was a standout and the best we had during our ten-day trip, featuring a wide buffet selection including fresh langoustine, a variety of gravlax, fruits, cereals, salads, and à la carte options. The pastries were especially good.

There were a few drawbacks: the front desk often had a queue, and the concierge was frequently away from their post. However, the staff overall were friendly and helpful.

In a city known for sustainability and natural beauty, The Reykjavik Edition offers a modern luxury experience that blends location, design, and comfort. It served as a perfect starting point for exploring the breathtaking landscapes of Iceland.

Recommended.

Happy travels,
