Levi Restaurant :: Copenhagen

Levi opened in central Copenhagen in 2022 under the direction of wine experts Jesper Boelskifte and Peter Trauboth. Between them, they bring an impressive pedigree, having worked at acclaimed restaurants including Alchemist and the three Michelin starred Geranium.

The concept is an imaginative wine bar and restaurant that seamlessly brings together Italian and Japanese cuisine using the finest seasonal ingredients. The striking interior combines the glamour of 1930s Milan and Art Deco with the clean simplicity of Japanese minimalism. Green marble, chrome, terrazzo floors, natural wood and deep moss green seating create a stylish yet inviting space. High ceilings, large picture windows and a lively bar at the front add to the atmosphere. It feels informal yet fashionably chic, with music that is completely on point.

Levi is neither a conventional fusion restaurant nor a traditional sushi restaurant. Instead, Japanese ingredients and techniques are thoughtfully incorporated into Italian dishes, while Italian flavours find their way into Japanese preparations. The combinations are creative, unexpected and, most importantly, delicious.

One standout was the Wagyu filet draped over a perfectly crisp arancino and finished with a dollop of wasabi. It was absolute perfection and one of the best bites of our entire trip. We also loved the delicate tempura shiso leaf with shrimp and tentsuyu.

The linguine with Norwegian lobster and saffron was beautifully prepared, but the pièce de résistance was the spaghetti tossed in miso butter and crowned with a generous portion of caviar. Rich, savoury and completely indulgent, it was a dish I will not soon forget.

Other intriguing combinations included risotto with cockles, razor clams and kombu, as well as a Japanese wonton with king crab and dashi. The menu changes weekly according to the availability of seasonal ingredients, and guests can order à la carte or choose an omakase style dinner. Sharing is encouraged, making it easy to experience a wide variety of dishes.

Wine is a major part of the Levi experience. The impressive cellar is particularly strong in Italian wines, while also featuring noteworthy bottles from other important wine regions. Three levels of wine pairings are available, along with an extensive and creative cocktail selection.

For dessert, we chose the pistachio gelato finished with olive oil and salt. Simple, luscious and perfectly balanced, it was an ideal ending to the meal.

Levi was one of my favourite restaurants in Copenhagen. Casual, unpretentious and effortlessly cool, it brings together the best of Italian and Japanese food cultures in a way that feels original, exciting and incredibly delicious. It was a truly unique dining experience.

Recommended.

Happy dining,
