A new Thai restaurant quietly opened in Leslieville in March 2026, and judging by the crowds, word is already spreading quickly. Aroi Thai doesn’t look like your typical Thai restaurant. Instead of bold colours and over-the-top décor, the space feels understated, tasteful, and thoughtfully designed in soft whites, beige, muted greens, and greys. Even the details feel carefully considered, from the two-toned porcelain floors designed to resemble wood, to the overhead fans, elegant light fixtures, curved bar, and gold cutlery that adds a subtle touch of sophistication.

We arrived early for our 6 p.m. Sunday reservation, but by 6:30 every table in the restaurant was full. The place was absolutely slammed with unexpected walk-ins. Owner Shamicka Chandran was even called in on her evening off, along with extra reinforcements, to help manage the sudden rush. When the restaurant fills up, it definitely becomes what I like to call “energetic,” with the noise level rising right along with the excitement in the room.

Chef Jay, who is from Northern Thailand, brings authenticity to many of the dishes and curries, but there are also modern interpretations woven throughout the menu, showcasing bold and vibrant flavours. We started with a refreshing pomelo salad topped with shrimp, crispy shallots, and roasted coconut, a bright and lively dish that worked beautifully. The scallop ceviche, while visually appealing, could have used a little more punch and seasoning for my taste.

The Pad Thai was a very good and authentic rendition, beautifully presented with delicate strands of egg resembling a bird’s nest draped over the noodles. The green chicken curry, ordered mild, arrived with just the right amount of heat and paired perfectly with fragrant jasmine rice.

For dessert, we finished with the classic sticky rice and sweet mango, always a comforting ending to a Thai meal. I also sampled the Guava Notini mocktail, which leaned a little too sweet for my liking, though the beverage program overall is quite polished, featuring a curated wine list, sake, and several sophisticated cocktail options.

Warm and welcoming service tied the evening together, even amidst the chaos of a packed dining room. It’s clear that Leslieville was ready for a restaurant like this. Aroi Thai features dishes that reflect Thailand’s rich culinary heritage while incorporating refined techniques, modern presentations, and the bold depth of flavour that makes Thai cuisine so beloved. Combined with the inviting atmosphere and warm hospitality, it made for a thoroughly enjoyable and delicious dinner experience. This is a welcome addition to the Leslieville dining scene and one that will likely become very difficult to get into as word continues to spread.

Happy dining,
Shanea
