I decided to revisit a restaurant I dined at 39 years ago in Hong Kong, remembering it for its exceptional cuisine. The restaurant Man Wah, located in the Mandarin Oriental in Central, has been delighting guests with its exquisite Cantonese cuisine since 1968 and has retained its Michelin star for the 11th year in a row. Also renowned for its dim sum, Man Wah was an obvious choice for my return.
Although the restaurant underwent a complete renovation in 2020, it still boasts its panoramic view of Victoria Harbour and the Hong Kong skyline from the vast windows on the 25th floor. The lavish, chic ambiance features stunning cyan-blue lacquered panels inlaid with gold brass, rich wood details, and chandeliers resembling bird cages, making it one of the most beautiful dining rooms in Hong Kong. The main dining room is completed by several smaller private dining rooms, each with a bonsai plant on every well-spaced table, enhancing the sense of luxury.
For lunch, we were offered set menus or a la carte options. Opting for the latter, we found it challenging to choose from the wonderful regional specialties prepared by Chef Wong and Chef Wia, and chef de cuisine chef Hung Chi Kwong. The menu featured both traditional and innovative dishes, many of which are labor-intensive and skillfully prepared. We relied on our knowledgeable server to recommend some of the best signature dishes, and the service was both attentive and expert.
Our meal was a high-end dining experience filled with culinary delights. The soup dumplings were fabulous, as were all of our dim sum choices. The flat rice noodles were flavourful and expertly executed, and the mango pudding, always a favourite of mine, was refreshing and delicious. Dining at Man Wah was a peaceful and elegant oasis away from the bustling crowds of Hong Kong. Few restaurants in the city can boast a legacy as long as Man Wah’s and still be on the top of their game.
Recommended.
Happy dining,
