Most imports struggle to match the original, but Mimi Chinese in Miami—located at 1575 Alton Road in the heart of South Beach—is a rare exception. Under the guidance of the incredibly talented culinary director David Schwartz and executive chef Brandon Chong, this restaurant sets a new standard for Chinese dining in South Florida.

This isn’t David Schwartz’s first triumph. Despite his young age, he has already built an impressive culinary empire, including the Bib Gourmand-awarded Sunny’s, the acclaimed Linny’s, his deli-inspired steakhouse, and the first Mimi Chinese location—all in Toronto. He also earned the prestigious Michelin Young Chef Award last year. Now, with the first U.S. outpost of Mimi Chinese under the Big Hug Hospitality Group, Miami is lucky to have him.

Mimi Chinese is, without a doubt, the best Chinese restaurant in South Florida. The space is upscale, elegant, and immersive, with dim lighting, striking red and black accents, and meticulously designed interiors. Without windows, the restaurant creates an intimate sanctuary, shielding guests from the bustle of the outside world. Here, bold, vibrant, and aromatic regional Chinese cuisine takes center stage, showcasing seasonal ingredients, fragrant spices, and dishes inspired by David’s extensive travels in China. He re-imagines classic flavors with modern finesse, delivering a dining experience that is both exciting and deeply satisfying.

Many of Toronto’s signature hits have made their way to Miami, including the crispy shrimp toast, the famousHidden Chickenburied under a fiery heap of chilies, and the unforgettable General Tso’s Chicken glazed in a finger-licking ginger syrup. The showstopper, however, is the Four-Foot Noodle, bathed in house-made chili oil and dramatically cut tableside—a must-try for spice lovers.

The menu is designed for sharing, offering everything from oysters and caviar service to refreshing raw selections, savory chef’s specials, steaks, and expertly crafted noodle and rice dishes. Even the vegetable offerings are standout and the desserts are not to be missed.

The beverage program is equally impressive, with a curated selection of artisanal cocktails, an extensive wine list, and premium sake. The service is impeccable—on my last visit, they even surprised me by automatically bringing my custom cocktail,The Shanea, crafted with my favorite spirit, gin. Now that’s attention to detail! You should ask for it!

You might even spot a celebrity or two, as Mimi Chinese has quickly become one of Miami’s hottest new openings and a trailblazer for South Florida’s dining scene. A true perennial favorite, this restaurant is an absolute must-visit.

Recommended.

Happy dining,

Shanea
