Miami’s restaurant scene is sizzling with a wave of remarkable new openings, and one of the most buzzworthy arrivals is Mother Wolf, the latest venture by renowned LA chef Evan Funke. If you’re a fan of Netflix’s Chef’s Table: Pasta, you’ll know that Funke is a maestro of handmade pasta. After years of studying traditional techniques in Italy, he brought this dying art to California, earning critical acclaim with his restaurants Mother Wolf and Funke. Now, he’s bringing his culinary genius to Miami- nothing short of spectacular.
Nestled at 3841 NE 2nd Avenue in the heart of the Design District, just across from the acclaimed Cote, Mother Wolf exudes “Old-School Maximalism.” Picture burgundy damask wallpaper, ornate chandeliers, terrazzo floors, a white baby grand piano, velvet-backed banquettes, and antique mirrors, all complemented by dramatic faux trees lining the dining room. Elegantly dressed staff enhance the experience, ensuring the setting feels as indulgent as the menu.
Upon entering the spacious foyer, you’ll encounter a glass-enclosed pasta-making atelier where a chef crafts noodles in real time—a mesmerizing preview of what’s to come. The lounge area features a stunning 30-foot bar with lounge seating, ideal for walk-ins, while the main dining room boasts oak paneling and timeless charm. The expansive restaurant accommodates 240 guests, yet reservations are fiercely competitive, with bookings available only seven days in advance—a challenge for meticulous planners like me!
The open kitchen at the rear hums with activity, featuring a pizza station, a wood-fired oven, and a bustling brigade of chefs. The menu is a triumph, making it difficult to choose just a few dishes—so I’ll definitely be back.
We began with Chef Funke’s legendary focaccia, perfectly baked with a golden crust, and the Fiori di Zucca—lightly fried squash blossoms stuffed with creamy ricotta. The batter was delightfully crisp without being heavy, and they arrived fresh and piping hot.
Of course, the pastas are the star of the show, and they exceeded every expectation. (These might be the best plates of pasta in Miami). The standout? The Pappardelle with wild boar ragu.
Mother Wolf isn’t just a meal; it’s an unforgettable experience. Don’t miss the chance to savor Chef Funke’s artistry in a setting that feels like a love letter to Italian tradition. It was
a triumph of flavor—a perfect harmony of perfectly cooked noodles and a sauce that was richly schmaltzy and deeply satisfying. We also savored the Linguini al Limone, a vibrant dish made with Meyer lemons, fresh basil, and Parmigiano Reggiano—a bright and balanced combination that was another standout. All the pastas are meticulously handmade, a testament to the chef’s dedication to his craft.
Our carb-fueled feast continued with a wood-fired thin-crust Fungi Pizza, topped with a medley of wild and cultivated mushrooms and an indulgent trio of cheeses: Taleggio, Scamorza, and Parmigiano Reggiano. While undeniably delicious, I found the cheese a touch overwhelming for my taste.
The wine list, predominantly Italian, is a treasure trove of rare finds, with more than 400 bottles and several intriguing options by the glass. Complementing the wines is a thoughtfully curated craft cocktail program and an extensive Amari menu, making it a haven for beverage enthusiasts.
For dessert, we couldn’t resist sampling the gelato, indulging in a rich and creamy vanilla alongside a delightful Stracciatella. The Meyer lemon and orange blossom gelato also caught my eye for next time. Their Tiramisu gets a Miami twist with key lime cream—a creative nod to local flavors.
Chef Evan Funke, a two-time James Beard Award winner, continues to honor ancient Roman culinary traditions with passion and precision. Miami is lucky to host his soulful, indulgent cuisine. The staff further elevates the experience—well-trained, warm, and enthusiastic, a rarity in Miami’s dining scene.
Though currently open six days a week, with plans to expand to Mondays and lunch service soon, Mother Wolf is already becoming a cornerstone of the city’s culinary landscape. This is food that speaks to my soul—rich, glorious, and deeply satisfying. As someone who’s visited Italy over three dozen times, I can say this is as close to an authentic Italian embrace as you’ll find in Miami.
Without a doubt, Mother Wolf will become one of my go-to spots. Don’t forget to schedule a workout the next day—it’s worth every calorie.
Recommended.
Happy dining!
