Normandy Isles, a quaint neighborhood in North Beach on Biscayne Bay’s eastern shore, radiates a charming beach town vibe. Its central plaza is surrounded by delightful restaurants and boutiques, making it a go-to spot for locals and visitors. Among its culinary gems is Sumak, a recently opened Turkish restaurant that offers a warm, authentic dining experience brimming with charm and hospitality.
Open seven days a week, Sumac features indoor and outdoor seating and a cozy backyard space. The ambiance at Sumak is inviting and eclectic. The interior boasts large crystal chandeliers, a spacious bar, burgundy walls and ceilings, and wooden floors accented with leather chairs. Shelves adorned with knickknacks, books, and vibrant plates add a personal touch, while pewter mugs elevate the table setting. The extensive menu is a feast for the senses, and owner Zafer is always on hand to recommend standout dishes. The offerings range from cold and hot mezze to kebabs, soups, salads, seafood, and grilled specialties. Many dishes are cooked in a wood-fired brick oven or over a charcoal grill, infusing them with rich, smoky flavors. One must-try item is the manti—delicate Turkish dumplings, hand-rolled twice weekly by a dedicated chef, served with a zesty red sauce and garlic yogurt. The Turkish pizza is another popular choice among diners. At the same time, the wood-charcoal grilled lamb chops were slightly overcooked and came with mashed potatoes instead of the baked potato promised on the menu. The chicken shish was good, tender grilled chicken thigh kebabs paired with homemade lavash bread, orzo pilaf, roasted tomatoes, green peppers, and a tangy side of fresh onion sumac.
The bar program at Sumak is equally impressive, with a talented bartender crafting about three dozen signature cocktails. The Golden Passion Martini and Mango Tonic were standouts. Happy hour runs daily, offering small bites for $7, beer for $4, wine for $8, and cocktails for $9—a great deal for this vibrant spot. Dessert is where Sumak truly shines. The homemade künefe—a rich dessert of phyllo, cheese, and honey topped with toasted pistachios—is a must. The Turkish Marash ice cream, with its unique chewy texture that resists melting, is another delightful treat. To end the meal, all patrons are served traditional Turkish tea, a lovely and authentic touch.
With its cozy, welcoming atmosphere and authentic Turkish menu, Sumak is a neighborhood gem that offers excellent value. It’s the perfect choice when you’re looking for a satisfying, local dining experience without venturing too far from home.
Happy dining,
Shanea
