After a brief 30-minute drive from the bustling Denpasar International Airport, we arrived at the tranquil Alila Villas in Uluwatu, a high-end Hyatt property, and were immediately taken aback by the stunning contemporary architecture and breathtaking views. Though completed in 2009, the resort looks as new and modern as ever. Photos don’t do justice to the peaceful and secluded setting, perched dramatically on a cliff overlooking the Indian Ocean.

Upon a relaxed check-in, we were whisked to our villa on this extensive 35-acre property. Despite its size, with 184 villas, the resort never feels crowded and retains its secluded atmosphere. Each villa features a private pool, cabana, and 24-hour butler service. Spacious and harmonious with the natural environment, the villas include indoor/outdoor showers and a large conventional indoor one. The patio allows for private sunbathing on your terrace, making clothes optional. While the villas are set far from the ocean on a steep hill, a slight ocean view is possible if you stretch your neck.

Alila Villas Uluwatu focuses on sustainability, using recycled materials and incorporating lava rock roofs, bamboo ceilings, and windows designed for natural airflow to minimize lighting and air-conditioning use. Locally sourced materials and Balinese and Javanese craftsmanship further enhance the charm of the villa. Our one-bedroom villa, spanning 3,000 square feet, included a full-size pool, patio/pavilion, his and hers vanity area, and a bathtub with a pamper box filled with bubble baths, face masks, and beeswax candles. Every room is equipped with a large LED TV, satellite channels, a DVD player, and a safety box. With 24-hour room service, you might never want to leave your villa. There are also 2 and 3-bedroom villas available.

The resort’s two main restaurants, offering Indonesian and Western cuisine, provide good but not outstanding meals. The property also features the cool Batique whiskey and cigar bar, which is home to the most extensive collections of single malt whiskies in Bali. You can also indulge in a curated selection of spirits and wines, all enjoyed to music during some of their DJ sessions. There is a lovely spa engaging some incredible therapists. I received a remarkable and sublime Balinese massage. You can also partake in daily yoga classes available on the cliffside pavilion overlooking the sea. There is also a small fitness room on the property and a lovely boutique. The 164-foot infinity pool by the cliff’s edge is magnificent, and treats are served throughout the day. We even found an ancient temple while exploring the vast estate. Be cautious of the monkeys as they like to snatch any food left outside your villas.

The sunsets on this part of the island are magical, and the service is attentive and genuinely welcoming. Despite a few minor technical issues in our room, they were promptly rectified. The villas weren’t perfect. I found the rooms dark at night, there was also insufficient lighting in the bathrooms, so putting on makeup at night was a challenge. I also could have used more drawer space as I ended up using the large couch in our room to place some of my belongings. Despite these minor inconveniences, our stay at Alila Villas Uluwatu was pure bliss. It was the perfect retreat after an arduous flight from Canada and will remain a cherished memory for years to come.

Highly recommended.

Happy travels,

Shanea
