The Four Seasons Hotel Mexico City is one of the grand dames of the city. Opened in 1994 on the prestigious Paseo de la Reforma, it has long been considered one of Mexico City’s landmark luxury hotels. Designed in the style of a traditional Mexican hacienda, it is built around a magnificent interior courtyard filled with soaring palm trees, lush gardens and a beautiful fountain that creates a tranquil oasis in the heart of one of the busiest cities in the world. Over the years it has welcomed presidents, celebrities and dignitaries from around the globe and has earned a reputation as one of the city’s finest luxury hotels.
The hotel is currently in the final stages of an extensive renovation. While it doesn’t yet offer all the sleek modern amenities or spectacular skyline views of the newer Ritz-Carlton, what it does offer is a superb location, timeless elegance and some of the finest service I have experienced anywhere.
From the moment we arrived until the day we departed, the service was exceptional. The valets, doormen, greeters and concierge staff were warm, professional and genuinely eager to help. There are nine concierges, and each one seemed determined to make our stay as enjoyable as possible.
The hotel is led by General Manager Tulio Hochkoeppler, but I would especially like to recognize Hotel Manager Angelica Sanz Rincón, who came to Mexico City after many years at the Four Seasons Toronto. Angelica couldn’t have done more to make our stay memorable. She anticipated our needs before we even asked and handled every request with warmth, grace and genuine hospitality.
Although the pool was closed because of the renovations, the hotel graciously offered us the use of either the St. Regis or Ritz-Carlton pool should we wish to swim. My husband wasn’t impressed with the temporary makeshift gym, so a member of the staff personally walked him to two nearby gyms so he could decide which one he preferred. We were also upgraded to a renovated room to compensate for the inconvenience, a thoughtful gesture that was very much appreciated.
Our room was spacious, exceptionally quiet and very comfortable. The renovation has introduced a more contemporary look while still incorporating warm woods and elegant Mexican touches. My only criticism was that the room was simply too dark. Applying makeup or choosing clothes for dinner in the evening was surprisingly difficult because of the subdued lighting.
The newly renovated lobby is elegant and inviting, while the spectacular central courtyard remains the heart and soul of the hotel. It is a beautiful place to enjoy a coffee, a cocktail or simply relax between sightseeing and dinner.
Breakfast each morning was excellent. The generous buffet featured a wide selection of Mexican and American favourites, fresh fruit, pastries, cheeses, juices and hot dishes, while an extensive à la carte menu was also available. The hotel is also home to Zanaya, its acclaimed Mexican restaurant, and Fifty Mils, one of Mexico City’s most popular cocktail bars.
Another highlight was the spa, although still makeshift, I enjoyed one of the best massages I have ever had.
The Four Seasons Mexico City may not be the newest luxury hotel in the city, but there is something undeniably special about it. It has warmth, history, character and, above all, extraordinary service. Once the renovations are fully completed, I have no doubt it will once again be the shining star of Mexico City.
All in all, it was a wonderful stay.
Recommended.
Happy travels,
