Florence isn’t exactly known for its abundance of fish and seafood eateries due to its inland location. Yet situated on the south side of the Arno River, about a 20-minute walk from the city center, and a stone’s throw from Porta San Frediano, lies a beloved dining spot among the locals known as Fuor d’acqua. Housed in a converted carriage depot, the venue seamlessly blends modernity with the echoes of the storied past, boasting two elegantly appointed rooms adorned in creams, with crisp white tablecloths, arching ceilings, and exquisite tableware. While I favour the more refined ambiance of the first room, the second caters more to families with screaming babies, larger groups, and tourists.

At Fuor d’ Acqua the menu is a reflection of the day’s freshest catches and seasonal offerings, promising an exceptional array of seafood delights. However, brace yourself for a persuasive push towards a tasting menu and upselling, particularly if you are an unsuspecting tourist. Though the menu boasts an extensive selection, I found our fish dishes to all be oversalted, though the raw crudo and sashimi remain standout options. The warm squid, tender and sweet, was a particular highlight. Additionally, pasta dishes featuring fish and seafood were on offer.

The wine cellar boasts an impressive collection of over 250 bottle selections and an extensive champagne list, with reasonable prices. Upon seating, guests are greeted with a refreshing pour of Prosecco, and following our mains a delightful lemon intermezzo. Despite our protestations of fullness, the dessert sampler was suggested, and to their credit, was well executed. Service was formal and refined.

While Florence may be synonymous with steak, Fuor d’acqua offers an alternative with its focus on fresh seafood. Though it is touted as one of Florence’s finest, having dined multiple times at Langosteria in Milan, I must admit they simply don’t compare. Nonetheless, Fuor d’acqua remains a haven for seafood enthusiasts.

Happy dining,

Shanea
