Located on the fringes of the medieval charm of San Gimignano, with a breathtaking vista of cypress trees, vineyards, and olive orchards sprawled across the valley lies Ristorante Da Pode. Adjacent to the Hotel Sovestro, this gem of a restaurant boasts a sun-drenched terrace that exudes enchantment. Originally a rustic farmhouse, owners Sergio and Lucia acquired the property in 1985, carefully renovating both its interior and exterior, while preserving its authentic character, complete with wooden beams, terracotta floors, and ancient stone walls adorned with remnants of its farming past. With Lucia and her daughter Alessia orchestrating culinary gusto in the kitchen, and Sergio and Barbara managing the front of the house, the essence of familial warmth infuses every aspect of this establishment.
Consistently garnering acclaim from Michelin over the years, including another nod for 2024 as well as a coveted bib gourmand, Ristorante Da Pode prides itself on sourcing the freshest, highest quality ingredients from local producers. Situated mere meters away, their vineyard and olive groves yield wine and olive oil that they use in the restaurant. The menu, though extensive and initially overwhelming, promises a culinary journey worth savouring. The menu is a little difficult to navigate, but each dish is described in Italian, French, English, and German, reflecting the restaurant’s commitment to inclusivity and hospitality.
Guided by time-honored Tuscan family recipes and ingredients sourced from artisanal local producers, the menu evolves with the seasons, showcasing the bounty of organic farms. From the incredible sweetness of my melon served with prosciutto to the delectable plate of fresh artichoke salad with parmesan, each dish is a testament to simplicity elevated to sublime heights. Homemade kinds of pasta steal the spotlight, with a pappardelle adorned with wild boar and incredible gnocchi kissed by an abundance of fresh truffles which were both highlights. Meanwhile, a mammoth Tuscan steak aged for 25-30 days tantalized neighboring diners.
Accompanying this epicurean journey, a bottle of Tiganello, a revered Super Tuscan red, elevates the experience, offering a taste of indulgence at a fraction of the cost back home. Despite the bustling atmosphere of touristic San Gimignano, Ristorante Da Pode provides a tranquil, magical sanctuary, inviting patrons to immerse themselves in the splendor of Tuscany with a memorable lunch or dinner.
Highly recommended.
Happy dining,
