Chef Niven Patel is undeniably one of my favorite chefs in Miami, and I make it a point never to miss dining at any restaurant he opens. His latest venture, Paya, launched in September 2024 with his partner Mo Alkassar, and it’s wonderful. Fans of his Coral Gables gem, Mamey, will be thrilled to find that Paya carries forward a similar island-inspired concept—this time in the heart of Sunset Harbour. I’ve always been willing to brave Miami’s traffic for a meal at one of Patel’s restaurants, but now that he’s brought his talent closer to home, I couldn’t be happier. Adding to the excitement, Chef Niven is also preparing to open Ghee Indian Kitchen in Wynwood soon, set to delight diners with bold Indian flavors. Known for his exceptional ability to craft dishes bursting with bold, vibrant flavors, Patel uses produce from his farm and local purveyors to create unforgettable meals. Located at 1209 17th Street, in the former Joliet space, Paya has been completely re-imagined into a tropical oasis. From the lushly revamped entrance to the poolside terrace and lounge, the ambiance transports you. They’ve retained the beautiful green-and-white tiled floors while adding touches like a coral-hued raw bar, white-painted walls, and the same bar with a sage countertop. Pops of greenery and a 70s and 80s soundtrack round out the vibrant, relaxing atmosphere. The menu is expansive, offering both a la carte options and a well-priced $75 tasting menu that includes five appetizers, three mains, and two desserts—a fantastic value. Many dishes will feel familiar to Mamey enthusiasts, with exciting new additions. Standouts include the scallop crudo with star fruit, jalapeño, and passion fruit and the ever-popular truffle grilled brie cheese with mango jam served on Sullivan Street sourdough, the tamarind lamb chops with roasted plantains and jerk-spiced yogurt were a showstopper, as was one of the mains, a lemongrass-glazed daily catch, paired with bok choy, heirloom carrots, and a luscious coconut curry sauce. The prime skirt steak, perfectly cooked and served with crispy Yukon potatoes and roasted chimichurri, was another highlight. Dessert fans, rejoice: Patel’s Brugal 1888 Rum Cake, a Mamey favorite, has made its way to Paya. With a crispy brûléed exterior, a hint of toffee sauce, and a scoop of vanilla ice cream, it’s a treat that doesn’t overwhelm with rum flavor—just pure decadence. Patel’s signature style, drawing inspiration from the Caribbean, Southeast Asia, and Spain’s islands, shines through in every dish. Paya offers a fun, unfussy, and delightful dining experience packed with dynamic flavors and inventive combinations. This tropical retreat is a must-visit for anyone craving bold, flavorful cuisine in a relaxed yet pretty setting.

Recommended.

Happy dining,

Shanea
