I’m a big fan of the group who created the pop-up Sunny’s to the beloved Jaguar Sun and Vice Versa. It was disappointing when Sunny’s restaurant closed, but at least I could still enjoy Jaguar Sun. Now, Sunny’s is back—and bigger than ever. With Jaguar Sun’s staff relocating to the new Sunny’s Steakhouse, Jaguar Sun has sadly closed its doors. Vice Versa’s other venture, which I’ve reviewed previously, offers a casual yet lively atmosphere with incredible pizza and pasta. But Sunny’s Steakhouse is on another level. Reopening in its original location at 7357 NW Miami Court, the once-open-air spot has transformed into a permanent space that’s nearly unrecognizable—this time, it has walls!

Sunny’s still boasts its convenient parking lot and large outdoor dining area under a twinkle-lit banyan tree, complete with a lovely bar. But that’s where the similarities end. The new space is chic and sophisticated, featuring a sexy indoor dining room with white tablecloths, dim lighting, and a black-and-white tiled floor. A striking half-circular bar takes center stage, adorned with hand-carved woodwork and palm tree-etched mirrors. The kitchen, formerly a makeshift setup, is now a stunning glass-enclosed exhibition space facing the courtyard. With room for 220 guests and a private event room, this iteration of Sunny’s is built to impress. Despite the upscale upgrades, Sunny’s hasn’t lost its charm—or its fantastic food. The menu includes a raw bar with offerings like shrimp, tuna tartare, hiramasa, scallops, and stone crabs by the claw. There are fresh salads and a meat-and-charcuterie section, where we savored the decadent wagyu carpaccio. Plates of pasta are still a highlight, with some favorites from Jaguar Sun returning, including the agnolotti with corn, blue crab, and saffron—still as delightful as ever. While there are a few fish, chicken, pork, and lamb options, let’s not forget: this is a steakhouse. With five cuts of steak on offer, we opted for a perfectly cooked hanger steak, paired with a vibrant salsa verde. The sides were equally impressive, especially the crispy russet potatoes. And I’m thrilled they brought over Jaguar Sun’s famous Parker rolls—they’re an absolute must-order.

The bar program is just as stellar, offering an extensive cocktail list, wines by the glass, beers, low- and no-alcohol options, and a gorgeous wine cellar. My guava cosmopolitan was a standout. For dessert, I indulged in the familiar and delightful mini toasted croissant ice cream sandwich—a true highlight.

Sunny’s is open for dinner Wednesday through Sunday, with happy hour from 5 to 7 p.m. Helmed by former Four Seasons executive chef Aaron Brooks, the menu emphasizes seasonality and elevates every dish. Owners Will Thompson and Carey Hines have crafted a culinary gem, and I couldn’t be happier to see Sunny’s return, bigger and better than ever. This is a dining destination you won’t want to miss.

Recommended.

Happy dining,

Shanea
