I’ve long avoided dining at Casadonna on 1737 N. Bayshore Drive, mainly due to its mixed reviews and association with the Groot Hospitality Group—especially after a disappointing and disastrous experience at Swan Restaurant under Dave Grutman’s umbrella. Reluctantly, I decided to give Casadonna another try, perhaps swayed by the promise of its beautiful space. And indeed, the venue is striking—a $20 million build-out housed in the historic Women’s Club, alongside Klaw restaurant located upstairs.
However, the experience left much to be desired. The valet service was the first letdown; as soon as I arrived, the valets walked away without assisting, which was uncalled for, given the premium they charged. Inside, Casadonna dazzles with glamorous decor—high ceilings, arched doorways, pastel interiors accented with gold, lush greenery, and tasteful artwork. The buzzy bar area complements the overall ambiance, and the outdoor patio, with its inter-coastal view, metal trellis, and vine-draped setting, is undeniably beautiful. Yet, the charming semi-circular booths and stylish setup can’t fully redeem the experience.
Service throughout the evening was notably subpar. We spent much of the meal searching for our server, ultimately relying on the busboy for assistance. The drinks were passable, but the food quickly became the downfall. While the focaccia was average and the octopus proved decent and tender, the artichoke salad and burrata were lackluster. The pasta arrived as a bowl of overcooked mush, drowned in overpowering truffle oil, and the asparagus was so salty it was nearly inedible. When we pointed out the issues, the server’s only response was a curt inquiry about returning the dish—without any apology or offer to replace it.
Dessert, which is touted as a highlight, did little to lift the overall impression. The lemon sponge cake tower, while visually appealing, failed to impress in flavor, and the selection of sorbets and gelato, though beautifully presented, was let down by bland accompanying fruit.
For a restaurant positioned at such a premium price point, Casadonna falls short in service and culinary execution. If you’re seeking a refined dining experience, this venue may not be the best choice—unless you’re drawn to its trendy, youthful-vibe, and scantily dressed women.
Not recommended.
Happy dining,
