If you haven’t visited the village of Elora, I highly recommend it. This charming and picturesque community in Wellington County, Ontario, is renowned for its 19th-century limestone architecture and the breathtaking Elora Gorge. The Elora Mill Restaurant, part of the Elora Mill Hotel and Spa, is a must-visit dining spot. Perched above the gorge, the restaurant offers a captivating setting and is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Executive chef Dacha Markovic crafts an ever-changing menu inspired by the geography, local farms, and seasonal ingredients, reflecting the essence of Southern Ontario cuisine. Located near some of the finest farmland in the province, the restaurant sources its ingredients from its organic farm, local farmers, and artisans. The collaboration between the chefs and these local producers ensures a true farm-to-table experience.

Whether you dine on the lovely outdoor patio during pleasant weather or inside the historic stone building, with a glassed-in dining room with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the rushing falls and the Grand River, the ambiance is nothing short of enchanting. The exposed stone walls from the 1850’s add a touch of a rustic element to the setting.

During our visit, which coincided with the summer harvest, we enjoyed dishes like sweet corn soup, a delicious chicken sandwich on ciabatta bread, and a lighter take on veal schnitzel, all accompanied by farm-fresh vegetables. The pasta with fresh zucchini and toasted breadcrumbs was adequate. The non-alcoholic lavender lemonade was disappointingly sour and lacked any lavender flavour. However, the overall experience was delightful.

While the food may not be extraordinary, the location and atmosphere make it a wonderful place to visit for a meal or a short stay. I recommend dining while it is light, to fully appreciate the stunning views.

Happy dining,

Shanea
