Miami’s sushi scene has long been lacking, but rejoice, for a new haven has emerged without breaking the bank. Enter Aoko Restaurant, gracing Edgewater at 2304 NE 2nd Avenue since December 2023, overcoming a three-year-long journey of Miami’s notorious permits and construction tribulations. Step into this attractive, cozy sanctuary adorned with concrete floors, wooden furnishings, and leather banquets, with a chic contemporary ambiance enhanced by the curated playlist. Whether you opt for the intimate omakase bar or a private table, every spot offers a view of the open kitchen. Bathed in natural light from the towering windows and the two-story ceilings, Aoko exudes a genuine warmth by Mitchell, one of its gracious owners.

Under the culinary mastery of Chef Ray and his eager sous chefs, sushi takes the spotlight across the menu, complemented by appetizers, nigiri, sashimi, temaki, and maki. You can embark on an omakase journey with options like a 10-piece nigiri for a reasonable $75, a 14-piece sashimi platter for $85, or indulge in a Bara Chirashi bowl for $38, akin to a poke bowl experience. We opted for a la carte, and our palate danced with delights such as the Cha Soba salad, featuring chilled soba noodles draped in a creamy sauce, and the Hamachi Carpaccio, adorned with chimichurri, nori slivers, and yuzu ponzu gel. Each sushi creation showcased pristine freshness and creative flair, from snapper to sea bream to wagyu selections, alongside tempting hand rolls like salmon avocado and spicy scallops.

Complementing the culinary journey is a curated selection of sake and Japanese beers, including our choice of the smooth filtered Dassai Junmai Nigori, boasting impeccable balance. Conclude your meal with something sweet, like the delightful matcha brûlée or a selection of mochi. Aoko stands as a guiding light among Miami’s sushi landscape, distinguished by its craftsmanship, attentive service, and inviting upscale-casual ambiance. The only hitch for now? Parking amidst adjacent construction is easily remedied by nearby side street spots. Open Tuesday to Saturday for lunch 12-3 and dinner 6-9, Aoko beckons sushi aficionados to savor its wonderful offerings which can become a regular habit.

Happy dining,
