Upon stepping onto a traditional Moroccan rug and entering Zuri, we found ourselves immersed in a vibrant oasis of colours and sounds. Nestled at 73 NW 26th Street on the quiet side of Wynwood, the former Wayku restaurant has undergone a remarkable transformation, into a 3,000-square-foot showpiece, weaving together cultural influences from Morocco, North Africa, and the Middle East.
Zuri, with its dark and moody ambiance, offers a modern interpretation of traditional Moroccan and Mediterranean-style cuisine. The decor, featuring Moroccan-style cushions, rugs, and lamps, creates a rich tapestry blending North African and Arabic influences. As you enter, the background music sets the mood, and a pour of rose water from an elegant vessel welcomes you.
Executive Chef Marlon Rambaron and Chef de Cuisine Keltoum Ait Badi’s menu transports diners to an elegant Riad atmosphere. From
homemade Kernia bread to delightful dips, like my personal favourite the Muhammara, a walnut and sweet pepper spread, the culinary journey is a feast for the senses. The sea bass crudo with lemon, sumac, and Fresno, along with a tender and flavorful octopus dish, showcase the culinary prowess.
The signature tagines steal the spotlight, particularly the lamb with a prune, apricot, and almond sauce, and the chicken tagine in a lemon, olive, and parsley sauce. The menu encourages a family-style experience, allowing patrons to savor a variety of dishes, including various couscous options and grilled items. Sides like cauliflower swarma and Meyer lemon brussel sprouts with a sour cherry sauce, complement the main courses.
Even if you are not a baklava enthusiast Zuri’s rendition might change your mind. The tart tartan is equally impressive. Complimenting the culinary delights is a top-tier beverage program featuring cocktails like the Choukrane, which I customized with gin instead of vodka, offering a refreshing blend of pomegranate and mint. Other intriguing cocktails, such as Sunset in Fes, Amber Riad, Marrakech, and Lost in Agadir, add to the overall exciting craft cocktails.
Zuri has undoubtedly earned a spot on my list of favorites. The vibrant spices, aromatic herbs, and flavours, plus an exotic interior, and welcoming hosts create a memorable dining experience. It truly is a jewel box of a restaurant. Recommended.
Happy dining,
Shanea
