If you are in search of a local gem, a neighborhood haven that offers delectable comfort food coupled with warm service and is family-friendly, then your quest ends at The New Schnitzel House located at 1085 NE 79th Street in Miami. Nestled within a quaint 2,290 sq. ft. space, this establishment exudes old-world charm- cozy, dimly lit, adorned with mirrors, and resonating with great jazz tunes in the background. On fair weather days, the beautiful back patio, complete with an additional bar, beckons as the ideal spot.

A revival of a classic German restaurant, (The Schnitzel Haus), the New Schnitzel House captures the essence of tradition with a twist and more modern flair. Our culinary journey commenced with a shared delight of all a hot, homemade pretzel served with a flavorful beer cheese, bread and butter pickles, pickled onions, and two varieties of mustard on the side, one sweet and the other spicy. The shrooms, featuring oyster mushrooms from Gratitude Farms, topped with shaved fennel, atop whipped goat cheese, proved to be another delightful appetizer. Additional tempting choices included a shrimp cocktail, latkes, smoked salmon dip, and a foot-long hot dog.

The menu offered three refreshing salad options; our pick was the baby gem lettuce in a roasted shallot dressing, a perfect complement to our hearty meal. For enthusiasts of sausages, the New Schnitzel House is a haven, but our primary focus was on the sensational schnitzels. Opting for the perennial favourite, chicken, we were treated to a masterfully crafted dish- a generous portion expertly pounded thin, juicy, and tender, coated in a crispy topping, and served alongside whipped lemony mashed potatoes. At only $28, it proved to be a shareable delight for two.

Venturing beyond schnitzels, we indulged in a braised short rib goulash with fingerling potatoes, carrots, and chive sour cream- a robust dish best savoured on a cool or rainy night. The menu extends to include hanger steak and honey mustard glazed salmon, catering to diverse tastes. A small children’s menu is also offered.

Sides add an extra layer of delight, with our selection of a baked sweet potato and a slightly dry spätzle, akin to a German Mac and cheese. The beverage program showcases a variety of German options, along with a few from France, Italy, Spain, and California. Natural wines, German beers, and signature cocktails are also offered.

For those with a sweet tooth, you can choose between a rich cheesecake adorned with a blueberry compote or a warm apple crumble topped with whipped cream. In the vibrant culinary landscape of Miami, The New Schnitzel House stands as one of the few establishments offering an authentic German experience. It’s a place that beckons you to return, not only for its comforting food at reasonable prices but also for the convenience of avoiding long drives in heavy traffic, complemented by the perk of valet parking available out back. Indeed, the New Schnitzel House had the makings of a mainstay in our dining repertoire.

Happy dining,
